** Does MLM Really Work? **

My wife's cousin, Alex, is living with us for his senior year of high school. The rest of his family is in Germany and he has lived there for 8 years. High School in America has been a new and interesting experience for him.

One experience he had this week was that of a "finance" teacher lecturing his class all about MLM or network marketing companies. Of course the finance teacher, although claiming to be giving an "unbiased opinion" of the industry, was clearly biased in his presentation and description - even going so far as to tell the students that he had tried MLM and it didn't work (because he failed at it).

He showed the students why it wouldn't work "mathematically" because you cannot continue an exponential progression beyond the number of people there are on the Earth (if you recruit 10 and they recruit 10, and etc. - only goes so far until you run out of people on the planet).

He also warned his students that MLM was really just a pyramid and only the people at the top make money. And of course he claimed that most people who join MLM are not able to make any money.

Luckily Alex is astute enough to recognize a clearly biased opinion when he hears one - despite claims to the contrary. Also he has watched our TeamSizzle organization grow over the past 8 months he has been with us and has seen first hand the success we and many others have had in SISEL.

We spoke about his teacher's comments and examined each claim and opinion.

First, why it won't work mathematically. This argument assumes that everyone in the business is interested in operating their distributorship as a business. The fact is that many people whether they sign up as a distributor or as a Preferred Customer end up simply as satisfied product users - or customers - the basis for any strong, long lasting business. Just because they choose not to enroll other distributors does not mean that they have "failed." Many are happy just buying and using the products at discount prices.

Each solid distributor needs to have a good base of customers to keep his or her business going. This means that you cannot assume or project a downline of 10 wide down 10 levels. First, because it never happens that way in reality - you never see a perfectly formed triangle shape where each level duplicates (and multiplies) the level above. And second, because customers do not usually build a downline. Some do eventually become distributors but many are just happy to be customers.

MLM does not rely on or even expect that everyone in the "tree" or "downline" will be building a business to earn a large commission check. The downline mechanism is simply the way of organizing the customers and a way to reward those distributors who increase their (and the company's) customer base.

Next was the objection that MLM was really just a pyramid structure where only the people at the top get lots of money. Clearly his teacher had never seen a typical "successful" person's downline structure. With over 20 years on the MLM business, the Mowers have analyzed 1000s of downlines. What they noticed is that most downlines form not a pyramid (which is what the 10 x 10 x 10 people assume) but actually form a diamond, where the majority of the people in the downline of an active business builder are in the 1st through 7th levels.

The Mowers took advantage of this knowledge in creating the SISEL compensation plan where much of the commissions are paid out on the first seven levels. But they also built an Executive Bonus that can reach theoretically infinitely downward into your downline.

We discussed the pyramid shape and Alex noticed that there is a pyramid (or hierarchy) type structure to nearly every organization; a sales force, a corporate organization chart, the military, political campaigns, etc. All have many workers, fewer supervisors, even fewer managers, even fewer executives and someone at the top. This is simply one of the hallmarks of successful organizations. Why shouldn't an MLM organization be any different; especially when it provides us the benefits of leverage and downline growth?

And finally, the fact that most people who join a MLM company don't make money. First, there's no denying it, most people who join an MLM company don't make much money. Also most people who set out to be best-selling authors don't make it. Most people who want to be professional athletes don't make it. MLM is often compared to traditional businesses where the failure rate can also be as high as 90% over a period of 5-10 years.

The primary difference between a traditional business and a MLM business is the barrier of entry related to capital - money. It takes VERY little money to start an MLM business as compared to a retail or other traditional business. This means that there is virtually no barrier of entry to starting an MLM business. The capital barrier of entry to starting, say, a McDonalds restaurant franchise is much more significant - in the millions of dollars.

Plus there are few if any qualifications required to join a MLM company or sign up as a distributor. No experience is required. No special training is needed before signing up. No degrees or other academic credentials are required. Anyone who is willing to sign the form and pay the modest enrollment fee is welcome to join.

That means that MLM attracts a much broader cross-section of people - people from nearly every conceivable type of background and experience level. And not all of these people are going to succeed in MLM - just as most would not succeed in running a traditional business. The risks of failure are not much different from a MLM business vs. a traditional business. But the consequences of failure in a MLM business are much less financially damaging than failure in a traditional business - simply because of the difference in the amount of capital needed to start each type of business.

So is it better to allow nearly anyone the opportunity to start their own MLM business vs. the strict and daunting financial screening process required to start a traditional business? Sure, many more people may fail in MLM, but many more people were also given the opportunity to succeed.

No one will or should guarantee you success - but we do guarantee you the opportunity to succeed. We let you in the doors, we welcome you to the meetings, we checkup and encourage you every step of the way. In traditional business everyone else is your competition. But in MLM your success depends on the success of others who you help to succeed.

Over all I would much rather give anyone the chance and opportunity to succeed based on their efforts and my help vs. throwing a steep wall or barrier to them even starting a business due to lack of capital. MLM is the great equalizer of opportunity - but not a guarantor of success. We provide the opportunity to succeed, you need to provide the drive, ambition, patience, and diligence.
